Manning, Henry Edward

Manning, Henry Edward
(1808–92)
   Archbishop and Philanthropist.
Manning was the youngest son of a member of the British Parliament. He was educated at the University of Oxford and subsequently entered the Anglican ministry. In 1841 he was appointed Archdeacon of Chichester. He was influenced by the Oxford Movement and contributed to the Tracts for the Times. After the gorham judgement, he felt he could no longer remain within the Church of England and he converted to Roman Catholicism. He was ordained a priest and in 1865 he was consecrated Archbishop of Westminster. An authoritarian by temperament, he was a strong supporter of the doctrine of papal infallibility and he was made a Cardinal in 1875. He is remembered for his work among the poor of London and for his support of the dockers in their strike of 1889.
